Mulde Land Colditz / Grimma / Wurzen

The Mulde near Wurzen
The Mulde near WurzenBild vergrößern
The “Colditz story” is the cause for the fact that nearly each schoolchild in the United Kingdom of Great Britain knows the name of Colditz. The adventurous escape of English officers during the Second World War, who were imprisoned in the castle as prisoners of war, fills some books. Colditz not only fascinates with its historical old town, the castle sitting enthroned on a porphyry rock and the view from the local tower. The trips on foot, by bike or by Kremser into the Colditz Mulde Valley, the Colditz Forest and the Thümmlitz Forest offer the visitor a great variety of flora and fauna. With its historical town centre and its attractive densely wooded surroundings the town Grimma is traditionally a place of popular resort. Majestic Renaissance and Baroque buildings and the impressing town hall are visited by numerous guests as well as the legendary ruin of the former Zisterzienser Monastery Nimbschen. Katharina von Bora lived in this monastery, the later wife of Martin Luther.

It will be a real experience if you cross the river Mulde by ferry a few metres ahead and if you visit the ship and water mill in Höfgen and go by the Mulde ship to Grimma again.

In the midst of an attractive hilly landscape the traditional health resort Bad Lausick is located. The small idyllic town is characterized by well-kept bourgeois houses, the town hall, the Sankt-Kilian Church as well as the attractive spa district with the English style park. For 175 years health treatments have been carried out here, and the town has developed into an important touristic centre.

...wonderland is everywhere

This statement was made by the probably most famous son of the town Wurzen, the poet, cabaret artist and painter born in 1883, known under his stage name Joachim Ringelnatz.

In the Wurzener land extensive forests, wide river meadows and swimming lakes as well as castles with beautiful parks and gardens wait for your visit.

Also the mixed woodlands of the Naunhofer-Brandiser forest invite for recreational hiking tours. The Naunhofer Lakes are a place of popular resort, because they belong to the cleanest stretches of water, which are suitable for swimming, in Saxony.
