Mulde Valley Waldenburg / Glauchau / Meerane |
 | | | | Grünfelder Park (landscape park in English style) in Waldenburg | | | |
The landscape along the Zwickau Mulde is incomparably attractive due to its variety of natural beauties.
Embedded into the basin of the Erzgebirge the town Glauchau is located at the right bank of the Mulde. In former times surrounded by standing water today seven steeply sloping hill ridges protrude, where during the course of time the town centre has been developed.
For this reason the people from Glauchau jocularly compare themselves with Rome, which was built on seven hills. In the industrial town in the countryside the two castles Hinterglauchau (1460/70) and Forderglauchau (1728/30), which are only separated by a rampart ditch, are worth seeing. They represent a special construction with respect to history and architecture.
From 1728 to 1730 the famous organ builder Gottfried Silbermann stayed in Glauchau. For the town parish church St. Georg he probably created the only Silbermann organ in the valley of the Zwickau Mulde.
After Glauchau the river reaches the Saxon hilly land and builds one of the most beautiful valleys in Saxony in complete arrangement with the landscape. Majestically castles climb up steep banks and look down from the mountain on the silver-shining stream of the Mulde. One of it is the castle of the princes of Schönburg-Waldenburg. It was built in the English neo-gothic Tudor-style. Additionally the pottery town Waldenburg accommodates a museum with internationally significant natural-scientific collections like the cabinet of natural products. A “must” for the guests is the Grünfelder Park, cultivated in English style in 1780. The cloud castle with its ornate cast iron figures in the park is also very impressing. The Zwickau Mulde takes its course through towns and villages as well as an attractive nature, which again and again presents itself differently.
